National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)

What it is for

NEET UG is the common entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS and several allied undergraduate courses across government and private institutions. It replaced a patchwork of separate state and institutional entrance tests, so for most candidates it is the only medical entrance examination that matters.

How it is structured

1. The examination

   A single objective paper covering physics, chemistry and biology, with biology carrying the largest share of questions. Negative marking makes unconsidered guessing costly.

2. Counselling

   Seat allocation runs through centralised all-India and state counselling processes, with separate quotas. Rank determines options, and the process itself takes planning.

Who it is for

School students in the science stream with biology, aiming at medical or dental courses. Eligibility, age rules, attempt limits and reservation criteria are set by the conducting and regulatory bodies and change — check the official sources rather than any summary.

What preparation involves

Preparation typically spans the final two years of school. Biology carries the most marks and rewards systematic recall, which makes it unusually well suited to spaced repetition and self-testing. Physics is where most candidates lose ground, because it needs problem-solving rather than memorisation. Because of negative marking, knowing when not to answer is a skill worth practising explicitly under timed conditions.

The distinctive feature of this exam is how much of it rewards accurate recall across a very large syllabus, particularly in biology. That makes the retrieval and spacing techniques on this site unusually valuable here — passive re-reading of a syllabus this size is close to useless.

The other distinctive feature is negative marking, which means calibration matters: knowing how confident you are is itself worth marks.
